 Most prospective plastic surgeons complete undergraduate degrees prior to attending medical school. Although bachelor's degrees in any major are acceptable, premedical students must complete certain prerequisite courses, including chemistry, biology and physics. The first two years of medical school, referred to as the preclinical years, teach students the fundamentals of body systems, diseases and patient care.

                       Neurologist

Neurologists are physicians trained in the treatment and diagnosis of brain and central nervous system disorders and diseases. Doctors trained in neurology complete medical school, a one-year internship in internal medicine and a three-year residency in neurology. Neurologists may also work in a subspecialty of the field, such as geriatric or pediatric neurology.

Similar to other physicians, neurologists must begin their careers by going to college and then attending medical school. As an undergraduate, aspiring doctors who major in a science, such as biology, chemistry or physics, will be better prepared for a medical school curriculum. Although most colleges do not have a pre-med major because medical schools do not require any specific major, some schools do offer a pre-med concentration that may include the biology, chemistry, physics and math courses required by medical schools.

Becoming a sports medicine physician requires completing a four-year pre-medical degree at an accredited college, plus an additional four years of medical school. Oral care professional

Duties and responsibilities: 

Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health.  Dental hygienists help patients develop and maintain good oral health.                  Periodontist

 Periodontists are dentists that diagnose and treat problems with patient’s teeth, gum, and any related part of the mouth. They remove decay from teeth and fill in cavities, repair cracked or fractured teeth and remove teeth, straighten teeth to correct bite issues, place sealants or whitening agents on teeth, administer anesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures, write prescriptions for antibiotics or other medications.

Requirements vary by state; dentist must be licensed in all states. Most dental students need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. 
 

                 Sonographer

Duties and responsibilities:

Diagnostic medical sonographers and cardiovascular technologists and technicians, including vascular technologists, operate special imaging equipment to create images or conduct tests. The images and test results that diagnostic imaging workers produce help physicians assess and diagnose medical conditions. Some technologists assist physicians and surgeons during surgical procedures.

Recreation Therapist

 Recreational therapists plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs for people with disabilities, injuries, or illnesses. Recreational therapists use a variety of modalities, including arts and crafts, drama, music, dance, sports, games, and community reintegration field trips to help maintain or improve a patient’s physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Education:

Most are required a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy or in a related field. Most employers, especially those in hospitals and other clinical setting prefer to hire certified recreational therapists. To become certified you must have a bachelor’s degree, completion of a supervised internship and pass an exam.

                     Radiation Therapy Technologist 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Radiation Therapy Technologists assist radiologists and oncologists (cancer specialists) in treating diseases by exposing areas of patients' bodies to ionizing radiation.  In addition to helping with treatments, technologists are responsible for maintaining the radiation therapy equipment and helping to maintain patient records. 

Average Salary:  $22,000 - $36,000

Educational Requirements:

Students can train to become a radiation therapist in either one or two year programs.  One year programs are often offered by hospitals.  To qualify for a one year program, an applicant must have graduated from an approved program in radiologic technology or been a nurse with education in radiation physics.  A high school diploma or a GED is required to enter two year courses.
